Custom built motor yacht
Benchmark was awarded the contact for the woodwork for a custom built 92’ 6” steel hull yacht. It was started in 2007 and finished three years later in 2010.
The hardwood is jatoba which was finished with cherry Watco oil. The simplicity of the doors allows the wood to take center stage. Curved bed frames requiring lamination, working in tight quarters, fitting pieces to a curved hull were issues that we were able to master.
This yacht also featured a curved staircase which was one of the most challenging aspects of the project. The job was completed working directly with the owner and boat builder to meet requirements and deadlines. The highlight of this project was when the crew from Benchmark Woodworks was invited along on the maiden voyage up the Columbia River. What a thrill!
Salvaged from a barn in disrepair, this vintage carriage was brought back to its original beauty. The seat and frame had to be completely redone so Benchmark replicated the original using white oak and European alder. Measurements and pictures of the original were taken to ensure accuracy of reconstruction.
This was a very enjoyable project to complete. The curved seat and detail required a lot of hand tool work and was quite challenging but was very rewarding when completed. This carriage is now driven in local parades.
Home Addition and Remodel
Benchmark Woodworks was asked to build some of the furniture and cabinetry for this 100 year old Victorian style home undergoing an extensive remodel and addition. The cabinetry was built using clear vertical grain fir and stained to match the existing décor.
The desk shown has a solid vertical grain cherry top and features file drawers on each side. All the pieces have inset doors with trimmed frame and panel doors. There is also a hidden compartment in one of the pieces.
The owners were very specific in wanting to retain the character of the house, so this project required working new technology into vintage design. The dark stain along with the design details really give these pieces an awesome look.
This custom gunstock was made entirely from scratch of figured black walnut and was one of two made. The checkering was all done by hand. It also featured an inlayed initial to personalize for the owner.
